Civic sense and senation

I keep wondering how often we do care about others when it comes to driving on the road in particular. As a typical Hyderabadi with the "light lelo" attitude, we are not bothered to consider the incovenience we cause by violating traffic rules, signal, lane discipline among others. Jiyo aur jinedo is supposed to be our slogan. But it has taken the twist of Jiyo aur marnedo in the present day context. Most of the time you are discouraged to follow any traffic rule. If you stop at a red signal, the bus wala with his bumper closest to yours, would nag you by honking so much so that the next time you would easily take a call when you are facing the signal. Why to take the trouble of following a rule and then getting nagged! To be humble on my part I cannot claim to be a 100% stickler to traffic rules. I too find excuses as justification to my small small violations(defintely they are small, I assure you). Anyway no one is coming on the side where the signal is green, a 100 metre travel on the wrong side would do no harm, treaded cautiously, than going some 500metres and waiting for the signal to take a U-turn, when a multitude of people are flouting the rules each passing day, what if I wink a time or two, I am in an urgency and need to reach my destination fast, among a sea of other reasons to justify my thinking. I believe in the theory that nothing in the world is 100% perfect so what if I stick to traffic rules 70-90% and light le occasionally! But then my friend Kasi(Kavuri Srinivas)'s words linger in my mind as if they are hitting on my head, when I go for these justifications. He once told me when I wanted to go some 50 metres on the wrong side. He said justifications apart what matters is whether you are following or flouting the traffic rules only would matter at the end of the day. As the axiom goes, "Character is about how one behaves when he is sure that no one is watching one". He is right then. Charity should begin at home, they say. What if we stop at the red signal, not mindful of the honking of the fellow road users, what if we follow lane discipline not caring if others do follow or not, what if we drive our vehicles without inconveniencing other road users. This may be a dream but then dreams do come true. A day might come when the habit of following traffic rules become contagious and the clan of sticklers to traffic rules would swell to become a majority. We all expect the system to be right so that we can follow that. We are good and well natured when we are abroad, we follow traffic rules, we do not spit on roads when we are in Singapore where we know that we would be punished if we don't follow the rules there. So why don't we create a system which would cleanse itself. Vyakthi becomes shakti, isn't it!

  1. A saying i think off when reading this "Rules should be followed by spirit not by words", this arguement holds true until people willing to stay and dont move even after horns and yelling behind at traffic signal points but when majority of people, especially here in Hyderabad, not abiding traffic signals(Sorry to be harsh) the one who follows it remains 'odd man out'. IMHO i have become more vulnerable to this and feel i am not following traffic rules vigorously as i used to do in Chennai suffice to say Traffic policemen in this city are completely out of sorts when it comes to controlling it. Rant over... :-)
