Women's Reservation Bill

For some strange or unexplainable reason, I have started liking the Women's Reservation Bill in the legislative houses from the time of its infancy. I really could not explain why? All the odds are stacked against supporting it. 1. Reservation in any form kills the spirit of competition, equanimity and level playing field. 2. There is no guarantee that reserving the seats for women would empower them - the so called biwi(rather biwiyaan, as politicians are notoriously known for their polygamy, atleast a vast section of them), bahu, beti brigade would be fighting the electoral battles as proxies to the existing male ones. 3. What is the guarantee that women behave differently than their male counterparts in and outside the legislative houses what with the experience of corruption, nepotism, crime and rule violation(traffic rules is the best testimony for this) showing up from the fairer sexes too.
All this apart, per se, I felt from the very beginning of the proposal of the bill that the presence of women in the parliament and assembly would contribute to the floors in more than one way. They can think out of the box and they can be dispassionate to the core when it comes to taking tough decisions and, most probably, they would not misbehave so much that we have seen from thier male counterparts. Less pandemonium would prevail on the lighter vein, I can say that there would be more who watch the parliamentary proceedings live on TV, which would further ensure that elected members would be forced to be accountable; also voting percentage might increase. Jokes apart, it would be pleasant change. What then these yadav trio is trying to establish and put spoke in the wheels of this Bill in the parliament? Quota within quota? Does it make any sense. Discrimination in the present age is only on 2 counts: 1. Haves and havenots 2. Fair sex and not so fairer ones. Where is the caste, religion coming in between. This mindset of seeking for protectionism to the ultimate end, isn't it bane to our Indian society by and large. I am glad that the opposition parties representing both the Left and the Right wing ones are at the centre of this landmark Bill passage, notwithstanding the tall claims by the Congress party. A great beginning indeed in the annals of the history of Indian democracy. Better late than never, 14 years is not a big time for achieving something historical of this sort of a thing.
