Summer Camp at Ramakrishna Mutt

Today the two streams of summer camp has concluded with the valedictory function at R.K. Mutt, Hyderabad. I was late to the office as I stopped to see the event on the way to my office. But there are no regrets as the occasion was such a great one that I could not resist from skipping it and I am only a phone call away to my office.

There were two streams of the Summer Camp at Ramakrishna Mutt; one a 3 week long programme for kids between 10 to 15 yrs and the other one a 2 week module for the ones between 8 to 10 years old. During the Camp Slokas' recital, Yoga and moral stories are taught to the younger ones. An added attraction would be a varied range of snacks after each day's session. Children like this no less than other things. The timings are from 8.30am to 11.30 am. Much stress is given on imbibing discipline and inculcating moral education in the children.

The function was presided by the Chief Pontiff of Hyderabad Mutt Sri Jnanadananda Swamiji. The Chief guest was Mrs. Poonam M, IAS. The overall supervision was done by the Director of the Vivekananda Institute of Excellence Sri Sukhadananda Swamiji. I stand corrected if the names of the swamijis are not correctly reproduced here. An added attraction was the Chairman of the Pennar Industries. All spoke eloquently about the camp's objectives and achievements.

The main Swamiji explained the importance of healthy body and healthy mind. While healthy body is achieved by Yoga and Pranayama, healthy mind is attained by imbibing discipline and getting moral education. The Chief guest has eulogised the importance of the pratham guru, the mother for all the children. She said that we all make investments and fixed deposits for our children's future. Those investments and deposits are nothing when compared to our investment in nurturing moral values and righteousness in our Children. Pennar Industries Chairman has appealed to parents to stay away from the idiot box T.V. and said unless the parents resist the temptation of the evils, they cannot expect their children to follow the verbal message of their parents. The VIE Director gave an excellent speech on the occasion. He told that the good work done by the Mutt will only has a meaning if it is carried forward at the wards' home. The camp is only a beginning for the right orientation of the younger ones. It was an inspiring message, I must say. The programme concluded with the prize distribution in various categories.

There are so many Summer Camps conducted in Hyderabad, with many an expensive affairs. What we expect our kids to learn or do by sending them to these camps! It is a big question mark. We are used to the feeling that if we pay more we get more and every parent is equally enthusiastic to make his child a versatile person. The ideals are good. Are we missing anything in this rat race? Definitely yes, I opine. What our children need is moral education nor sermons about righteousness alone. Our values have eroded to some extent with so much of pollution around us. Let us children be exposed to the right value education imparted by the preachers with unquestionable integrity. The environment says it all. That is the need of the hour. Let us make greater investments to the nation by building the character of our children by giving a chance to get the inspiration from this great institution. Let every child develop into a Swami Vivekananda or a Sister Nivedita. Let the gurus in the form of teachers and parents be inspired by the great guru Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and Sarada mata.

No need to feel that you have missed the wonderful opportunity this summer. If you happen to be a resident of Bhagyanagar, you are blessed with the opportunities in abundance. Starting this June 20th there is a course rightly titled Bala Vikas. The classes would be between 830am to 1130am for about 34 to 35 weeks, every sunday. The snacks too are part of the class and the fee is just Rs. 500. The admissions are open from 23rd May, 2010. If you are interested walk in to the Vivekananda Institute of Excellence with the copy of the birth certificate of your child. Arise, awake, stop not till the goal is achieved, said Swami Vivekananda. Let us go in search of his footprints.
